A NEW ARTIST TO PATRON MODEL

Studio Direct is an innovative model aimed towards assisting Emerging Artists with their transition into full-time studio practices.

Artists often struggle to find time to create work early on in their careers. Whether you’re working multiple part-time jobs, freelancing or teaching, there is always paid work that takes away from the time and energy you’re spending in studio. At the start of 2014, coming off of a primarily freelance design income, I asked 8 local Pittsburgh Art Patrons to assist me with this problem.

The Studio Direct model has allowed me to have a thriving studio practice, garner new patrons, expand my professional network, feel confident with my pricing, all while preserving my current gallery relationships. I’d like to share it with other artists. Be inspired by this concept and make it fit with your own creative practice.

THE STUDIO DIRECT OVERVIEW

Through the Studio Direct model an artist pre-sells their work at a discounted rate to a select number of Patrons. These Patrons not only get a great deal, but also get to support an artist's studio practice for a year and be part of an intimate community of participants. The Artist receives a stable foundation of income through the pre-sales, allowing for a more productive studio practice.

What follows is the outline of my model. I hand out this information in booklet form to people I think may be interested in participating in the program.

This model is meant to be a guide for you in terms of structure and language. You should edit it to fit your needs. You’ll find a link below to download this text and begin designing your own version!

STUDIO DIRECT

Investing in Creativity

Introducing STUDIO DIRECT: Your chance to support an emerging local artist, to endorse creative pursuit, and to ensure that you are getting the year’s only direct discount on my artwork. STUDIO DIRECT brings together a small community of people eager to invest in art in a new & exciting way.

At the start of 2014, I will be pre-selling eight paintings. This funding will provide me with the foundation needed for a dedicated studio practice. As a partner, you will get to visit my studio while I’m working on your piece and become a participant in my creative process.

Together, we will increase the value of your investment through a year of creative possibility.

YOUR PAINTING

Please understand, this is not a commission. We will have an initial conversation about my work and assess what you like. From there, I will do my very best to ensure that you receive a painting that you are happy with.

THE RESULT

Your return will come in two forms: a painting made during this unique yearlong program, and the increased value of said painting in the aftermath of our successful partnership. The year will culminate in an independently organized exhibit that showcases the 8 paintings amongst a much larger body of work.

CONTEXT

What does your investment do for me?
STUDIO FOCUS

I work as both a graphic designer and a studio artist. Currently, the balancing act between time spent on design ($$$!) and time spent on art ($???) is in constant conflict. A concrete studio art income will allow me to work towards my long-term goal of financial security as a professional artist.

NETWORKING

By establishing personal relationships with Pittsburgh collectors, I hope to strengthen my professional network locally, and see an increase in national opportunities. The exposure gained from this yearlong program will help to increase the value of my work in the future.

YOUR INVESTMENT AT WORK

Part of your STUDIO DIRECT investment will be used to redesign my website and print a promotional book that showcases my work and process. While these tools will be available for you to share with friends, family and colleagues at any time during the project, it’s the end-of-the-year exhibition that offers the most exciting chance for Patrons to show off their participation in this program.

WORKING TOGETHER

This is the only time over the course of the year that my paintings will be available at direct discount. The eight Patrons who invest in this program will be forming a partnership with me. While we won’t be working together on the actual art, we will be working together to make a mutual investment in the success of this art. That investment will only grow as this program gains momentum, allowing confident, assertive pricing moving forward.

CONTACT INFORMATION

Email: info@studiodirect.org
Phone: 555 555 5555

There are only 8 paintings available for purchase! Please apply early for the best chance at being part of STUDIO DIRECT.

*Contacting me does not ensure participation. In order for this program to be as successful as possible, I will strategically build a well balanced, diverse group of Patrons. Applicants will be notified by __________ of their acceptance into the program at which point a signed contract and submitted payment (due by __________ ) will secure your involvement.

IMPLEMENTATION

Once your Patron group is established, you’ll need to let them know how to proceed. Finalizing all of the terms of your agreement should be done contractually. Here is what I included in the Studio Direct “Welcome Packet.”

PATRON GUIDE

My guide explained what Patrons needed to do to secure their involvement in the program and thanked them for participating. It also reminded Patrons of event dates over the course of the year and encouraged them to visit my studio at any time.

THE CONTRACT

It is extremely important that you and your Patrons both sign a clear, professional contract. I mailed them two copies: one for them to keep and one for them to mail back to me with their payment in a self-addressed envelope. The contract I used can be downloaded below.
